By means of this recipe, you can effectively and constructively get your message out and cleared away in a clean, direct, complete, structured conversation.

By applying a Clearing and 5-Step Communication, you:

Handle whatever is inside you that is an obstacle to a solid open working relationship, and reduce everyone’s stress level !!!
Give and receive difficult, yet valuable feedback in a way that can be heard, understood, and accepted without defensiveness

Once upon a time people told stories to share experiences and to teach. Digital storytelling is the art of telling stories with digital multimedia to share a reflective narrative.As with traditional storytelling, most digital stories focus on a specific topic and contain a particular point of view. However, as the name implies, digital stories usually contain some mixture of computer-based images, text, recorded audio narration, video clips and/or music. Digital stories can vary in length, but most of the stories used in education typically last between two and ten minutes.

Digital storytelling can provide a creative ingredient to make the online learning process engaging and can lead to deeper learning. More and more organizations are harnessing the power of Digital Storytelling to enhance their online learning programs. And with that, many learning professionals are encountering the same challenges, such as: How can I use Digital Storytelling in online learning programs if I don't even know how to create a Digital Story myself? How difficult is it to create a Digital Story? What’s the cost?

Hey Trainers - Write 38 Instant Measurable Objectives in Minutes!

Having written objectives for over 25+ years, I admit.. I am very picky. And when I see a document that starts off with objectives that include "understand", I cringe. Excuse me... how to do measure someone's understanding of a concept or procedure? You can't.

What is a measurable objective?

- Objectives are written to give direction to training events.

- A measurable objective is an "action" verb engaging the learner to demonstrate new knowledge or problem solving skills.

- A measurable objective is "capable of being measured" dictionary.com

Here is how to quickly create measurable objectives with Bloom's Taxonomy theory into practice.

1. At the Knowledge Level: the learner exhibits previously learned materials by recalling facts, terms, basic concepts and answers.

Level 1: Key Words include: Choose, define, find, label, list, match, name, recall, relate, select, spell, tell, what, when, where, which, who, why

Use these Instant Objectives:

The student will be able to:

- Define what is ...?

- Match how is... related to...?

- Choose where is ... found?

- Tell why we chose to use...?

- Select the main...?

2. At the Comprehension Level: the learner demonstrates the ability to relate to facts and ideas by organizing, comparing, translating, interpreting, giving descriptions and stating main ideas.

Level 2: Key Words include: Classify, compare, contrast, demonstrate, explain, extend, infer, interpret, illustrate, outline, relate, rephrase, show, summarize, translate

Use these Instant Objectives:

The student will be able to:

Be happy if you can get them to solidly achieve typical goals of Levels 1 - 4.

You’ve all heard the joke about how a duck looks so placid and calm atop the water but under the water’s surface his feet are paddling as hard as they can. I ask the question, “Have we stopped paddling?” When the economy was claimed as “down turn,” “slow growth,” everyone was paddling as fast as they could to keep their jobs, pay down bills, repair and maintain rather than buy and build. Now that it looks like the economy is on an upswing have you stopped paddling and started looking for respite? Whoops…now it looks like a downturn again…wait a minute, it might have spiked…get the picture?

Learning should never stop, no matter what the economy brings. In fact, it’s often been said we can learn the most when times are tough because we seem to understand the priority of change, flexibility and focus. March Westside CTN Meeting - It was a good one!

If you didn’t attend the March 2011 Westside CTN meeting, you missed a great presentation on how to structure effective presentations. Alan Duncan, a Silver Houston ASTD sponsor, provided his insights on helping corporate SMEs develop and deliver effective training sessions instead of just data dumps. Even those of us who considered ourselves “seasoned” trainers had “ah ha” moments.

Alan suggested building the body of your presentation first – working each key point one at a time. For each key point, you should prepare what you want to say to introduce the learning point (gaining your audience’s attention) and then present relevant information. Decide on the effective order of the key points. Plan activities and prepare bridges by recapping the main message of the key point and transition to the next key point. Then, develop your closing and opening statements. At this point, you can decide what you will use to support your key points – which might be a PowerPoint presentation (or not)! Finally anticipate challenges and questions. Go back and add this content to your presentation.

Sonia Shamar, 2010 Scholarship Award Winner

I am honored to receive the ASTD Houston Scholarship award this year. I would like to thank ASTD Houston Chapter for their thoughtfulness in this regard.

I have been an ASTD Houston member since one year and am pleased with the invaluable learning experiences this institution has made available to me. As a volunteer in the membership committee this gives me an opportunity to meet lots of interesting people well established in the HRD profession. I have also volunteered in some events organized by the Chapter that has enabled me to get involved in the HRD community as a whole.

As a member of the chapter and getting involved in various events as a volunteer is a worthwhile investment of my time. The programs they sponsor are educational as well as enjoyable. I especially look forward to the Marquee events organized by the Chapter every three months where in they bring speakers who are expert in the topic under discussion as well as fun and interesting at the same time. Being a student member has been a great benefit since the Chapter provides special student discounts for all events organized by them and these events give me a chance to network with and learn from Learning and Development professionals.

Although I have been a member of ASTD Houston for only a year, I feel like I’m already a part of the group – as we say: ‘ASTD Houston family’. I have learned a lot from all the members and speakers. The Board/ management team has been so welcoming and encouraging. I plan to sustain being a part of this family, volunteer for them, learn from them and continue to enhance my knowledge in the HRD domain.

To become a member, go to Join ASTD Houston. Follow the directions to apply.

Presently there are four membership categories: general, student, senior and corporate. See the website for descriptions of each category. There is a yearly membership fee which can be paid by credit card. There is no processing fee.

Selecting a Location Venue

The most important element of a successful event is appropriateness of the location. The communication objective provides the standard for evaluating the location venue. For example, if your intention is to have an authoritative, instructional presentation with one speaker, then a room that allows for theatre style seating would be appropriate. If the objective is to have a more experiential, interactive session, then seating "in the round" would be more facilitative. If you intend to document the event with video, you would have a whole other level of parameters to evaluate.

In order to communicate effectively, no matter what the message is, the venue, the "medium", must be as transparent as possible. That is, the participants (and the presenter) must be able to attend, see, and hear the message clearly! Noise, low or misdirected lighting, or distracting, non-essential activity will challenge and stress the full attention that the audience needs to "get" the message you intend.
